Billy Hess tips to make you a better Portrait photographer

> Billy Hess Photography<

My Passion for photography comes from the desire for learning and being in competition with myself to get better & the fulfilling feeling I get in my soul when I get what I call the money shot, when I don’t see just a photograph I feel it.

  • When I shoot a portrait, I study the person I am shooting and feel what the person’s look is illuminating, which can be innocence, sexiness, seriousness or other characteristics and shot an image where the person looking at the photo feels it but I always know what the client wants to achieve in a photoshoot and I deliver.  After I get what the client wanted. I like to shoot some of the characteristics I felt when I studied the client. Many times you get side of the client that he or she never saw in themselves.
  • Shooting portraits is drawing or painting with light to get the style, mood, tone and emotion to get the creative shot you wanted to successfully get the image you were out to get for the photoshoot.
  • The eyes are the pathway to one’s soul in a portrait photo. The eyes should be pinpoint sharp. They portray many emotions like sexy, shy, thoughtfulness, seriousness ect.
  • Most times, you always want to use as low an ISO as possible to minimize noise, but because you should use a fast shutter speed, sometimes it’s necessary to use a higher ISO up to compensate for this.
  • Everything in the frame is you are accountable for. Background are very important in portraits and other types of photographs Background can draw a person’s eyes away for your subject shooting. When shooting portraits, it’s best to set a wide aperture to capture a shallow depth of field, so the background behind your subject is blurred, making the model stand out better. Blurred or solid backgrounds look great for portraiture and it can help to isolate your subject where they stand out. Always look for distractions in the background and it can be s shadow you didn’t see concentrating on your subject. Where you are shooting inside outside or people at events don’t let a distraction in the background ruin a good image.
  • Master your craft and never stop learning, don’t be afraid to experiment with lighting angles camera settings lenses.
  • The most important thing for a successful shoot id the connection between you and you model. I start the shoot making the model comfortable. The model must fell a trust and be comfortable with you so the model can open up that are able to let you in their space.
